Education of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing
The mission of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Program is to prepare teachers who are competent professionals with the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding the evaluation and implementation of educational programs to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The program was established in 1974 and is accredited by both the State Department of Education and NCATE. Montevallo is the only university in the state of Alabama to offer a degree in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Upon completion of the requirements for the B.S. degree, graduates are eligible for Class B special education teacher certification in the area of deaf education.
After completing 60 hours of college credit (48 hours with General Studies), students will apply to become teacher candidates in the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

Elementary Education
The Elementary Education Program is for those who wish to teach at the elementary level (grades K-6). Completion of the program leads to Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. In addition to a wide range of coursework and other program activities, teacher candidates complete a full-time (16 weeks) internship in a public school during their senior year.

Elementary Education/Collaborative
The Elementary Education Program with Collaborative Teacher Certification is for those who wish to teach at the elementary level (grades K-6). Completion of the program leads to a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) with additional certification to teach children who have cognitive, behavioral, physical, and/or multiple disabilities. This endorsement is only available to students in the Elementary Education Program.
After completing 60 hours of general education courses, students will apply to become teacher candidates in the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

Family & Consumer Sciences
The Family & Consumer Sciences Secondary Education Program is for those who wish to teach at the middle and high school level (grades 6-12). Completion of the program leads to Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) and a bachelor’s degree in Family & Consumer Sciences Education. In addition to a wide range of coursework and other program activities, teacher candidates complete a full-time (16 weeks) internship in a public school during their senior year.

Exercise and Nutrition Science (EXNS)
Our program is one of few in the country that combines exercise and nutrition sciences in a single degree. We offer unique opportunities to fine-tune your career pathway through specialization in Allied Heath, Health Promotion, Nutrition and Wellness (Dietetics), or Strength and Conditioning. Because the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a faster than average job growth rate for exercise, health, and nutrition fields for through the year 2024, we feel confident that our majors are prepared for rewarding careers and advanced educational and training opportunities.
Concentrations:
Allied Health
With a heavy focus on science courses along with study in areas like exercise physiology and testing, biomechanics, and pharmacology, the Allied Heath concentration prepares students with a variety of graduate school and career opportunities. With the job market for physical and occupational therapists remaining strong for the foreseeable future, this concentration is a good fit for those interested in the science of exercise and human movement. Students will complete an internship in settings that allow them to apply their learning in physical therapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine facilities.
Health Promotion
The Undergraduate Health Promotion Program is for those who wish to pursue careers in exercise physiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, corporate fitness and other health related professions. Course work is designed to provide a well-rounded scholarly understanding of the body of knowledge which relates human movement to wellness.
Nutrition and Wellness/Dietetics
The Undergraduate Nutrition and Wellness Concentration offers students the opportunity to pursue acceptance into the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CP) with the ultimate goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Upon completion of the program, students may be eligible to sit for the Registered Examination for Dietitians through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and enjoy a rewarding career in healthcare as the nutrition and food expert. As a professional, an RDN may pursue work in areas such as:
Clinical Nutritionist in a hospital
RDN for a healthcare clinic/doctor’s office
Corporate Wellness RDN for a large company
Community Nutritionist at the health department or government agency
RDN for a non-profit agency
Food Service Management opportunities in the hospital, school, or industry
Strength and Conditioning
The strength and fitness industry is ripe with opportunities for those who have developed the experience, knowledge and skills to lead individuals and organizations discover and maximize their physical potential. It is a practical concentration that prepares our students to meet industry standards as researchers, educators, strength coaches, personal trainers, and other roles in related fields. An applied internship opportunity is tailored to meet the student’s future career goals.”
